OVERVIEW

About Kamloops Food Bank:

Kamloops Food Bank is a 5-star financially transparent charity with a Good impact rating and an average B results reporting grade. It has a reasonably sized reserve of cash and investments and has 9% total overhead spending. For every dollar donated, 91 cents are available to go to the cause.

Founded in 1981 and serving the city of Kamloops, Kamloops Food Bank (KFB) distributes food to those in need across the city. In its latest 2024-2026 strategic plan, KFB plans to serve more people by improving its inventory management software and creating pop-up food markets in lesser reached neighbourhoods. According to the charity, this is needed because demand – particularly by children and seniors – has greatly increased in recent years.

Kamloops Food Bank runs three programs: FoodShare, StarFish, and Baby Bank. Charity Intelligence estimates it spent $1.5m cash on its programs and distributed $8.9m worth of food in the August 2024 (F2024) fiscal year. KFB did not provide a breakdown on how much it spent on each of its programs at the time of this profile update.

A Charity Intelligence 2022 Top 10 Canadian Food Bank

FoodShare is KFB’s food distribution activities and is the charity’s main program. In F2024, KFB distributed 2,589,532 lb of food (74% perishable and 26% non-perishable) to 9,000 unique individuals (2,477,387 lb of food distributed in F2023). It did this through 75 organizations consisting of 32 community agencies, 34 schools, and nine regional food banks.

StarFish is a partnerships program where KFB distributes backpacks full of food to children in need across Kamloops public schools. According to the charity, in F2024, it distributed over 6,000 backpacks filled with food and 15,500 snacks to children in 34 schools across the city.

Baby Bank is a baby product essentials program where KFB provides baby food, diapers, and other products to families in need. In F2024, KFB distributed 70,750 diapers and over 2,200 other essentials for babies. The charity did not disclose how many families received these baby products.

Results and Impact

Kamloops Food Bank spent $1.9m cash on its operations and distributed 2,589,532 lb of food to 9,000 unique clients across 74,000 visits. This means it spent around $0.72 / lb distributed and provided 288 lb of food / client (or 35 lb of food / visit) during F2024.

KFB recovers food from grocers and farmers that would otherwise end up in landfills. Because of these efforts, the charity prevented 31,028,215 kg of greenhouse gas emissions from reaching the atmosphere in F2024.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not completely represent Kamloops Food Bank’s full results and impact.

Finances

Kamloops Food Bank is now financially transparent as it has published multiple years worth of its audited financial statements on its website.

KFB’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing, meaning it does not clearly report which expenses relate to program, administrative, and fundraising activities. This is not a best practice.

KFB’s F2024 T3010 filings report zero program, administrative, and fundraising expenses – it reports all expenses in the other expenses category. This appears to be a filing error. Accordingly, in F2024 Ci assigned line items from its audited financials to these expense activities to the best of its ability.

In F2024, Kamloops Food Bank received $1.6m in cash donations (donations and special events revenue) which is 80% of cash revenue. It also received $191k worth of government funding which is 10% of cash revenue. In F2024, KFB received $8.9m worth of donated food – an 11% increase from $8.0m received in F2023.

Administrative costs are 2% of total revenue less investment income and fundraising costs are 7% of cash donations. Its 9% total overhead spending means that for every dollar donated, 91 cents are available to go to the cause.

KFB spent $1.5m cash on its programs (16% increase from $1.3m spent in F2023) and distributed $8.9m worth of food in F2024.

At the end of F2024, KFB had $2.1m worth of reserve funds (cash and investments). This can cover 139% or nearly one year and five months of its annual program spending.

Note: 1. LINE-ITEM COSTING: Since KFB follows line-item costing, Ci referred to its T3010 filings when available to help calculate total program, administrative, and fundraising costs. 2. AMORTIZATION: In F2023 and F2022, Ci backed out amortization on a pro-rata basis from program, administrative, and fundraising costs. This is because Ci referred to its T3010 filings during those years. 3. GIFT CARDS: Ci included the value of donated gift cards received, affecting total revenue by $29k in F2024, $51k in F2023, and $113k in F2022. 4. RESTRICTED GRANTS FOR CAPITAL ASSETS: Ci included the value of restricted contributions for capital projects in donations, affecting total revenue by ($nil) in F2024, ($nil) in F2023, and $576k in F2022. 5. DEFERRED DONATIONS: Since KFB follows deferred accounting, Ci adjusted donations for changes in deferred contributions. This better shows donors the year-to-year movement of cash within the charity. This affected total revenue by ($36k) in F2024, $39k in F2023, and $80k in F2022. 7. BAD DEBTS: Ci adjusted other expenses for changes in the loss or recovery of bad debts. This affected total expenses by ($nil) in F2024, $1k in F2023, and $2k in F2024.
