OVERVIEW
About Against Malaria Foundation Canada:
Against Malaria Foundation Canada is a 3-star charity with High Demonstrated Impact. The charity is not financially transparent, but has an A+ Results Reporting grade. For every dollar donated, 100 cents are available to go to the cause, which is outside of Ci's reasonable range for overhead spending.
Founded in 2006, Against Malaria Foundation Canada (AMFC) is a fundraising branch of Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), based in the United Kingdom. It is one of 11 sister foundations around the world. In F2024, Against Malaria Foundation Canada raised and sent $6.4 million to Against Malaria Foundation, which received $108.0 million (CAD). AMFC contributed to 6% of AMF's overall donations. This summary of AMF’s activities is based on AMF’s global reporting.
AMF reports that malaria kills 625,000 people and causes illness in 240 million people each year. 90% of deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa and 70% of deaths occur in children under five. AMF purchases long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). The charity reports that it uses 100% of public donations to purchase LLINs. It does not distribute the nets itself, but rather makes legal distribution agreements with local partners to distribute the nets. AMF says that its internal costs for program monitoring, salaries and overhead are covered by funds designated by private donors. Donations from the public buy bednets. In F2024, the average cost of one bed net was C$2.96 (US$2.16) compared with C$2.43 (US$1.80) in fiscal 2023.
LLINs are treated with insecticides, which makes nets 99% effective even with holes or tears. The charity reports that mosquitos are beginning to develop resistance to some insecticides used in LLINs. AMF has increased the use of nets that use a combination of insecticides (pyrethroid and chlorfenapyr) to combat this issue. A single net lasts three to four years and protects two people. Its evidence-based work is advised by the malaria advisory group.
In F2024, Against Malaria Foundation bought 23.4 million nets. F2024's purchases are entirely for distribution by partners in Democratic Republic of Congo. In F2023, Against Malaria Foundation purchased 26.7 million nets: 10.8 million nets for Uganda, 6.3 million nets for Zambia, 5.7 million nets for South Sudan and 3.9 million nets for Togo. The charity reports that at year end, 6.1 million nets were being delivered, 17.8 million nets were scheduled to be distributed over the next 12 months, 32.7 million were scheduled over the following 12 months, and 96 million nets were currently being assessed for distribution. In fiscal 2024, AMF spent US$50.7m on buying bednets.

Results and Impact
AMF reports that every $1 million spent fighting malaria improves the GDP of Africa by $12m. It reports that for every 600 nets in use, one child doesn’t die, and 500 to 1,000 cases of malaria are prevented.
AMF reported in its F2024 annual report that its post-distribution monitoring activities showed that one day after distribution, 95% of bed nets were being used to cover sleeping spaces. After 12 months, this number had fallen to 80-90%. After 24 months, 70-80% of the bed nets were still in use to cover sleeping spaces.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Against Malaria Foundation Canada's results and impact.
Charity Intelligence has rated Against Malaria Foundation Canada as High impact based on demonstrated impact per dollar.

Finances
Against Malaria Foundation Canada is not financially transparent. Ci received its financial statements through a request with the CRA Charities Directorate. The charity’s financial statements are not audited.
Against Malaria Foundation Canada received $6.4m in donations in F2024. The charity sent $6.4m to Against Malaria Foundation, which is 100% of revenue.
AMFC does not report any fundraising and administrative costs. For every dollar donated, 100 cents are available to go to the cause. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
AMF prides itself on its zero overhead so public donations fund bednets. Against Malaria Foundation is the global head office based in the UK. From Ci's discussion with AMF's management, it chooses not to spend money on audits or offices so more money can go towards bednets. AMF Canada's directors approve the grants from Canadian donations to AMF global. Of the three Canadian directors, two are from AMF global. AMF created a bespoke internal financial management system, FinSys, that produces its financial records for its UK auditor within hours of its fiscal year end.
Against Malaria Foundation Canada has $7k in reserve funds (cash and investments), which can cover under 1 month of annual grant costs. This is within Ci’s reasonable range. Against Malaria Foundation (global) has $184.6m in reserve funds and spent $54.9m on its program in F2024. AMF's reserve funds can cover annual program costs for 3 years and 4 months, which is outside of Ci's reasonable range. AMF global does not have an urgent need for funding.
