OVERVIEW

About Street Health:

Street Health is a 5-star, financially transparent charity with a Good impact rating and an excellent A results reporting grade. Its reserves can cover just over 13 months of its annual program spending. Its 19% overhead means that for every dollar donated, 81 cents are available to go to the cause.

Founded in 1986 and operating in Toronto, Street Health provides harm reduction, overdose prevention, mental health counselling, walk-in clinic services, and ID services for those in need. Its services target Toronto’s homeless, precariously housed, and racialized communities and are reportedly a safer alternative to public healthcare. The charity’s clients report feeling talked down to and dismissed by public healthcare workers, so have turned to Street Health as an alternative for their healthcare needs.

Street Health runs five programs: Mental Health, Harm Reduction, Nursing, Overdose Prevention, and Access & Identification. It spent $4.7m on its programs in the March 2024 fiscal year (F2024). Charity Intelligence (Ci) did not update the charity's F2025 financial information as its T3010 filings with the CRA – are needed to properly report overhead costs – have not been released at the time of this profile update.

A Charity Intelligence 2024 Top 100 Rated Charity

Mental Health was 34% of Street Health’s program spending. The charity’s caseworkers work one-on-one with those at risk of or experiencing homelessness and suffering from mental health challenges. Street Health did not disclose any additional breakdown of these results between these programs.

Harm Reduction was 32% of Street Health’s program spending. The charity’s harm reduction workers both visit emergency shelters and operate their own drop-in sites across Toronto. In F2025, these workers reported 5,654 client interactions at emergency shelters and reached 570 people. Street Health saw 7,324 visits at its drop-in sites where it distributed 113,767 harm reduction kits to those in need.

Nursing was 14% of Street Health’s program spending. Aside from the 9,796 interactions and 967 clients helped between its Mental Health and Nursing programs, the charity did not report any other quantified results for this program.

Finances

While Street Health’s audited financial statements separate expenses into program, administrative, and fundraising activities, thye do not allocate salaries to overhead. The administrative and fundraising costs reported on its audited statements are materially less than the amounts reported on its T3010 filings. Due to this, Ci did not update the charity's F2025 financial information as doing so would materially understate both overhead ratios.

Street Health received $3.1m in donations (68% of total revenue) and $1.3m of government funding (29% of revenue) in F2025.

Administrative costs are 15% of total revenue excluding investment income and fundraising costs are just under 5% of donations. Its 19% overhead means that for every dollar donated, 81 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Street Health spent $4.7m on its programs in F2024 – a 21% increase from $4.2m spent in F2023.

At the end of F2024, Street Health had $4.3m of reserve funds (cash and investments). Its reserves can cover 112% or just over 13 months of its annual program spending.
