Founded in 2004, St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation of London (SJHCF) raises funds to invest in research, patient care, and education at St. Joseph’s Hospital (SJH). St. Joseph’s Hospital is a Catholic health organization owned by the St. Joseph Health Care Society. SJHCF funds four patient care facilities: St. Joseph’s Hospital, Parkwood Institute, Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care, and Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care. It also funds the Lawson Health Research Institute, which focuses on research to improve patient care at SJH.

In F2025, the foundation reported $8.7m in grants to St. Joseph’s Hospital. SJHCF funds three programs: Research, Patient Care and Education.

Research represented 62% of program costs in F2025. SJHCF grants to the Lawson Health Research Institute to improve patient care. In F2025, the charity reported that SJH had 832 active research projects. It reported that, under the C. difficile treatments, the charity performed more than 200 fecal microbiota transplants a year.

Patient Care represented 37% of program costs in F2025. The Parkwood Institute recorded 203,429 outreach visits, with 323 beds in F2025. Parkwood’s Finch Family Mental Care Building had 156 beds, with 159,393 outpatient visits.

The remainder of grant spending was allocated to Education (1%).

In The News: St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation of London ceased all research studies involving dogs following public concern regarding a cardiac study using dogs. This research induced up to three-hour heart attacks in dogs and puppies and euthanized the dogs to study their hearts.

Results and Impact

The Lawson Health Research Institute continued its work in treating C. difficile infection, which causes diarrhea and colitis in the colon. This research is centred around putting donated feces from healthy donors into FMT capsules to boost patients’ immune systems and gut health. With partners at London Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Michael Silverman launched a pilot study of 20 patients with skin cancer and found that a single FMT dose can boost immunotherapy response rates from 35 to 75 per cent. Patients with lung and kidney cancer experienced similar benefits.

This may not be a complete representation of St. Joseph Health Care Foundation of London’s results and impact.

SJHCF is not yet rated on impact (n/r), which does not affect its star rating.
