OVERVIEW
About Hockey Helps the Homeless:
Hockey Helps the Homeless is a 1-star charity. It has a below-average results reporting grade of F. For every dollar donated, 56 cents are available to go towards the cause. Its reserve funds can cover almost ten months of annual program costs.
Founded in 1996, Hockey Helps the Homeless (HHH) takes advantage of Canadians’ passion for hockey to raise money for homeless charities. HHH organizes tournaments that connect hockey pros and fans. With the money raised, HHH’s goal is to end homelessness in communities across Canada, which it attempts to achieve through funding and partnering with other local agencies that provide housing support for the homeless.
In fiscal 2024 (year ended June), Hockey Helps the Homeless granted $3.9m to 75 organizations. The largest grants were to Eva’s Initiatives ($220,000), The Mustard Seed ($167,000), and Urban Native Youth Association ($130,000).

Finances
Hockey Helps the Homeless’ financial statements follow line-item costing meaning it does not properly disclose which expenses relate to programming, administrative, and fundraising activities. This is not a best practice.
In F2024, Hockey Helps the Homeless received $594k in donations and $6.6m in special events revenue. Administrative costs are 14% of total revenues and fundraising costs are 30% of total donations. For every dollar donated, 56 cents are available to go towards the cause. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. In F2024, HHH granted $3.9m, a 68% increase from the $2.3m granted in F2023.
In F2024, HHH had $3.2m in its reserve funds. This can cover almost ten months of annual program costs.
