Samaritan's Purse Canada is a 3-star charity with Fair Demonstrated Impact. It is financially transparent and has a B Results Reporting grade, which is average. Its reserve funds and overhead costs are within Ci's reasonable range. 

Founded in 1973, Samaritan’s Purse Canada (SPC) is a Christian evangelical charity that does essential relief and development work across the world. SPC helps people affected by war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine. The charity is the Canadian chapter of Samaritan’s Purse (SPI) that has international headquarters in the U.S. and additional branches in Australia, Germany, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. SPC’s main charitable programs are Operation Christmas Child, International Disaster Relief, and International Development. In 2024 Samaritan’s Purse Canada spent $29.8m on its programs. The charity’s most recent annual report is from 2023. Financial information is from 2024 while results (excluding Operation Christmas Child), are from 2023.

Many of the results reported below represent Samaritan’s Purse International, not just Samaritan’s Purse Canada’s programs.

Operation Christmas Child represented 44% of program costs in 2024, with $24.3m in program costs. SPC works with local churches to pack and send Christmas gift boxes filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items to kids across the world. The mission of this program is to share the news of Jesus Christ and make disciples of children across the globe. In 2024, Samaritan’s Purse Canada sent 436,209 shoeboxes to nine countries around the world. This works out to C$62 per Christmas gift box, yet most of this cost per Christmas box is the value of donated goods.

Across all Samaritan’s Purses, 5.5 million children were involved in The Greatest Journey, a 12-lesson discipleship course, in 2024.

International Development and Ministry Support represented 33% of program costs in 2024. SPC runs WASH, Food, Protection, Health, and Women’s programs in poor countries. SPI’s WASH program installed 12,300 household filters in homes around the world. The charity also installed 40 community and school filters and constructed over 850 latrines. This provided over 137,000 people with safe water in 2023. Its Food program trained over 22,000 people in agriculture and delivered over 2 million servings of food in 2023. SPC deployed 26 Canadian medical volunteers on short trips to hospitals and 11 post-residents to five hospitals in four countries through its World Medical Mission program. SPI’s Protection program trained over 3,000 people in antitrafficking and provided support services to over 15,800 women at risk.

International Disaster Relief represented 20% of program costs in 2024. SPC provides aid to areas affected by natural disaster or conflict. In 2023, this program focused on Israel, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Mexico. SPC sent 39 Canadian disaster assistance response team members to eight countries in 2023. In Israel, SPI sent 18,000 food vouchers, 4,000 hot meals, and partnered with over 50 local churches. In Ukraine, SPI provided 238 million lb of food to families and distributed 437,000 bibles. In Mexico, SPI transported 140,000 lb of relief supplies (solar lights, hygiene kits, jerrycans, water filters, cooking kits, and tarps) and sent 23,000 lb of food. The charity also installed four community water purification systems that each provide drinking water for up to 10,000 people per day. In Türkiye, SPI deployed over 100 doctors, nurses, and medical volunteers. These volunteers cared for 2,600 patients and performed over 100 surgeries.

The remaining 3% of program costs went toward North American ministries.

The most recent audited financial statement on Samaritan's Purse Canada's website is from 2022. Ci received the 2023 and 2024 financial statements after requesting them from the CRA. 

Samaritan’s Purse Canada’s audited financial statements use activity-based costing, which is a best practice. At the time of this report, its T3010 was not available. Ci used the charity’s T3010 to report government and international revenue. The fundraising ratio is likely understated.

Samaritan’s Purse Canada received $42.3m in donations and $29.3m in donated goods in 2024. The charity spent $29.8m on its programs, which is 69% of revenue (excluding donated goods). SPC recorded a surplus of $5.0m after capital expenditures, which is 12% of revenue (excluding donated goods).

SPC spent $1.5m on fundraising, which is 4% of donations, and $4.9m on administration, which is 7% of revenue. Total overhead spending is 10%. For every dollar donated, 90 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

SPC has $30.7m in reserve funds (cash and investments). The charity’s reserves can cover annual program costs for under one year, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.
