OVERVIEW

About Shriners Hospitals for Children:

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a two-star charity. It is not financially transparent and has a below-average results reporting grade of C+. For every dollar donated to the charity, 82 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci's reasonable range.

Founded in 1967, Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) raises money for Shriners Hospitals for Children - Canada (SHC-Canada). SHC-Canada is a children's healthcare centre in Montreal, Quebec. Shriners International is a global fraternity based on Masonic principles that supports 25 Shriners Hospitals across North America. Regardless of a family’s ability to pay, its hospitals treat children with nerve, muscular, and connective tissue disorders.

SHC distributed $19.6m to SHC-Canada in 2023. However, SHC-Canada paid $9.0m to SHC for rent. Thus, the net funds distributed to SHC-Canada were $10.5m in 2023. SHC does not provide a program spending breakdown. The most recent financial statements available at the time of this update were from 2023.

The charity does not have an annual report specifically for its Canadian branch. It did post a 2024 annual report for all its Shriners Hospitals together on its website. In 2024, it performed 217,615 clinical procedures, 24,492 surgeries, and 446,799 rehabilitation procedures. It also delivered 55,590 orthotic devices and 3,841 prosthetic devices. The charity reports it served nearly 147,000 patients in 2024.

Results and Impact

Shriners Hospitals for Children received two Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence awards in 2024. It received these awards for its ambulatory surgery and inpatient pediatric programs. It reports that these awards are given to the top 5% of healthcare organizations nationwide in patient experience.

SHC’s inpatient pediatric program also received the Press Ganey Pinnacle of Excellence award. It reports this award recognizes three consecutive years of excellence in patient experience.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not completely represent Shriners Hospitals for Children’s results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has not yet rated SHC on impact (n/r). This does not affect the star rating.

Finances

Shriners Hospitals for Children is not financially transparent as its audited financial statements are not publicly available online.

SHC’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. Its expenses are clearly defined between program, administrative, and fundraising categories.

In 2023 SHC received $4.9m in donations and special events fundraising. It also received $9.0m in rental income from SHC-Canada, which is 60% of total revenue.

Administrative costs are 2% of revenues (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 16% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 18%. For every dollar donated, 82 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

In 2023 SHC spent $19.6m on its grants, which is 129% of its revenue. In 2023 it had a deficit of $5.4m.

SHC has $23.6m in reserve funds (cash and investments). The reserves can cover 121%, or one year and two months of program costs.

The charity reports no employees or salary data on its T3010 filing with the CRA.

This charity report is an update that has been sent for review to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
