OVERVIEW
About Feed Ontario:
Feed Ontario is a five-star, financially transparent charity with a Good impact rating. It has an above average A- results reporting grade, reasonable overhead spending, and a reasonably sized reserve fund. For every dollar donated to this charity, 94 cents are available to go to the cause.
Founded in 1992, Feed Ontario provides food, financial aid, and logistical support to its network of over 1,200 food banks across Ontario. Its aim is to reduce food insecurity across the province. According to the charity, a lack of affordable housing and lagging wages have resulted in a 120% increase in food bank visits across the province since 2019. Feed Ontario also publishes research covering Canada’s food insecurity crisis like its most recent 2024 Hunger Report, runs political advocacy campaigns championing poverty reduction policy proposals, and helps its agency network improve food distribution capabilities.
The charity runs three programs: food distribution, agency member support, and research & advocacy. It spent $5.6m on these programs and distributed $20.5m worth of food in the March 2024 fiscal year (F2024). The charity did not report how much it spent on each of its programs in its latest annual report or audited financial statements at the time of this update.
A Charity Intelligence 2024 Top 100 Rated Charity
Food distribution is this charity’s main program. During F2024, Feed Ontario distributed 10,600,000 lb of food to over 1,200 organizations. This was then distributed to 800,822 unique individuals across 5,888,685 visits. This is a 45% increase from the 7,300,000 lb of food it distributed during F2023.
Agency member support represents grants, capacity building projects, and staff training programs Feed Ontario provides to its agency network. During F2024, the charity distributed $2.0m worth of grants and invested$650k in 32 new capacity building projects. According to the charity, these projects help existing food banks deliver more food to their clients. The charity also ran 31 skills training workshops where organizations learned how to improve operational efficiency in the face of rising demand.
Research & advocacy covers Feed Ontario’s past and recent work raising food insecurity awareness to all levels of government. During F2024, the charity distributed over 17,000 postcards pushing for poverty-reducing legislation. According to the charity, it held over 17 “Day of Action” meetings with Canadian politicians.

Results and Impact
Feed Ontario distributed 10,600,000 lb of food to over 1200 organizations, meaning Feed Ontario did not distribute food to clients itself. In F2024, these organizations served 800,822 unique clients across 5,888,685 visits.
Each client received an average of 13.2 lb of food during the year or 1.8 lb during each visit. It also means that each person visited a Feed Ontario associated food bank an average of seven times over the year. This is an average and does not imply that every unique client received food during F2024.
Since Feed Ontario’s 10,600,000 lb of distributed food is worth $20,472,803 according to its audited financial statements, it means that the value of the food it distributed is $1.9 / lb.
While Charity Intelligence highlights these key results, they may not completely represent Feed Ontario’s results and impact.
Charity Intelligence has given Feed Ontario a Good impact score based on its demonstrated impact per dollar spent.

Finances
Feed Ontario’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing which is against financial reporting best practices. This means it does not clearly define which line items in its statement of operations are related to program, administrative, and fundraising expenses.
During F2024, the charity received $3.5m worth of cash donations (9% increase from $3.2m received in F2023) and $20.5m worth of donated food (20% increase from $17.1m received in F2023). Donations and donated food represent 14% and 80% of total revenue, respectively. Feed Ontario also received $606k worth of government funding in F2024.
Administrative costs are 1% of total revenue and fundraising costs are 5% of donations, meaning Feed Ontario has 6% total overhead spending. For every dollar donated, 94 cents are available to go to the cause.
In F2024, Feed Ontario spent $3.5m cash on program operations and distributed $2.0m to its agency network.
At the end of F2024, the charity had $5.0m worth of net reserve funds (cash and investments) that can finance 90% or around 11 months of its total program spending.
