OVERVIEW

About Movember Canada:

Movember Canada is a financially transparent 3-star charity. It has reasonable overhead spending and an above average results reporting grade. The charity has large funding reserves of $81.3m that can cover over six years of program costs.

Founded in 2003, Movember Canada (MVC) is the Canadian arm of Movember Foundation (MVF). MVC focuses on addressing health inequalities for men. The charity states that in Canada, about one in eight men will get prostate cancer. MVC states that 60 men die by suicide each hour. It also states that 69% of suicides are by men.

Movember Canada runs its annual Movember campaign each November. Men show support by growing a mustache to raise awareness of men's health issues. Globally, MVF has funded more than 1,320 men’s health projects since its founding in 2003.

Movember Canada runs three main programs: Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, and Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. Charity Intelligence estimates MVC spent $13.3m on its programs and grants in its fiscal year ending April 2024 (F2024). Movember Foundation posts a shared annual report that includes Movember Canada along with the other Movember chapters. Ci did not find a breakdown of F2024 program spending in the charity’s annual report or on its website.

The Prostate Cancer program funds research on prostate cancer to help detect it earlier. Research also focuses on diagnosis, treatment, and support. MVC supports four registries that capture prostate cancer patient data. The charity reports it has collected data from over 250,000 men since this project began. It has also published 146 prostate cancer research papers. There have been 31 prostate cancer projects involving Canada since 2003.

The Testicular Cancer program provides resources to help men diagnosed with testicular cancer. MVC’s Nuts & Bolts webpage provides information about diagnosis, treatment, and life after treatment. The charity also researches testicular cancer. There has been one testicular cancer project involving Canada since 2003.

The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention program helps men connect better with others and seek help when needed. This helps improve men’s mental health and can reduce the risk of suicide. There have been 33 mental health and suicide prevention projects involving Canada since 2003.

  • 98% of participants said they intend to start a conversation using the skills they learned.
  • 95% of participants were more aware of the benefits of being more open.
  • 93% of participants were more confident in their ability to listen actively.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not completely represent Movember Canada’s results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has not yet rated MVC on impact (n/r). This does not affect the star rating.

Finances

Movember Canada’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. This means its expenses are clearly defined between program, administrative, and fundraising categories.

In F2024 MVC received $22.5m in donations. Administrative costs are 5% of revenues (excluding investment income). Fundraising costs are 17% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 22%. For every dollar donated, 78 cents are available to go to the cause. This falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

In F2024 MVC spent $13.3m on its programs and grants, which is 52% of its revenue. In F2024 it had a surplus of $7.3m, which is 29% of its revenue.

Movember Canada has $81.3m in reserve funds (cash and investments). The reserves can cover 611%, or six years and one month of program costs. Of MVC’s investments, 51% is in cash and cash equivalents, 38% in short term deposits, and 11% in long term deposits. In F2024, the annual return on investment for MVC was 4%. Its five-year annual return on investment is 2%.

In F2024, Movember Canada paid external fundraisers $162k who collected $856k in donations. This means it cost MVC 19 cents to raise $1 using external fundraisers.

From our financial review in June 2025, we highlight Financial Notes 4 and 6 in MVC's audited financial statements. These notes are about Movember Canada's related party transactions:

  • Movember Canada paid Movember Australia $5.7m in F2024, $5.2m in F2023, and $5.6m in F2022. These payments are for services provided to Movember Canada by Movember Australia.
  • Movember Canada has the same directors as Movember Australia.
  • Movember Canada is part of the global Movember network along with other national chapters. Movember Canada pays and receives money from these other Movember charities. Financial Note 4 does not disclose the total amount of payments between the Movember charities. It does disclose that, at year-end of F2024, Movember Canada owed $277 to Movember New Zealand. Movember Canada is owed $215k by Movember Australia, $19k by Movember USA, $29k by Movember Europe, and $96 by Movember Germany.

This charity report is an update that has been sent for review to Movember Canada. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.

Comments & Contact

Comments added by the Charity:

The following comment is from a previous profile. Additional comments may be forthcoming.

In regards to funding reserves, implementing the quantum of funds raised by Movember is a task that we take seriously. Movember invests funds in programs aligned with its strategic goals through an open and transparent process and includes peer reviews with experts around the world. Once an award is given, funding is provided on an agreed-upon basis, pending the program meeting stated deadlines and objectives. The funds raised by Movember in Canada are exclusively spent or committed to Canadian programs. Movember Canada also retains a balance of unrestricted funds for future campaign expenditures.  This is a responsible practice for charitable fundraisers to ensure continuity of annual fundraising efforts.
