About World Animal Protection:
World Animal Protection is a 4-star rated charity. It has an A- Results Reporting grade which is above average. For every dollar donated, 74 cents are available to go towards the cause. Its reserve funds can cover 1 year and 3 months of annual program costs.
Founded in 1980, World Animal Protection (WAP), formally known as World Society for the Protection of Animals Canada, is part of a global organization that works to protect animals. The charity strives for a world free of animal cruelty and suffering. WAP has offices in over 50 countries, with its Canadian branch located in Toronto. In 2024, World Animal Protection spent $4.1m on its programs. World Animal Protection's 2024 annual report was not available at the time of this update. While financial information refers to 2024, program information refers to 2023.
Animal Education and Awareness was 47% of program spending. Through videos, campaigns, and news reports, WAP hopes to educate the public about animal cruelty and mobilize them to create change. In 2023, more than 75,200 signed the petition to end the cruel commercial exploitation of dolphins, and 160 countries signed the Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture and Resilient Food Systems. For the charity’s Better Chicken Commitment to improve the quality of life for chickens, more than 41,000 people and 150 restaurants signed.
Animals in the Wild was 33% of program spending. World Animal Protection reports that approximately 10 million dogs are inhumanely killed every year due to a fear of rabies. In 2023, WAP gave 1.6 million rabies vaccinations to dogs across Asia. In 2023, the charity also saved 70 bears in Romania from the brutality of bear baiting.
Animals in Farming was 15% of program spending. World Animal Protection says that around fifty billion animals suffer daily in the industrial farming system. Factory farming also emits 11% of the world’s greenhouse gases. In 2023, WAP released a report on factory farming which reached 627 million people.
The remaining percentage of program spending was Policy (3%) and Animals in Disaster (2%).

Results and Impact
The charity reports that by the end of 2023, more than 1.37 million animals in South East Asia had been farmed more humanely. The Dee Farm in South East Asia plans to test extending organic, high-welfare farming to 6,000 chickens during 2024-2026.
In 2023, Copenhagen fashion week organizers revised their 2024 sustainability requirements to ban wearing skin and feathers from wild animals. In 2023, TripAdvisor and more than 200 other travel companies stopped promoting cruel elephant attractions. In June 2023, the Jane Goodall act passed its first vote at Senate. This act proposes new legal protection for certain animal species, such as elephants, big cats, and bears, being held captive in zoos.
