Founded in 1967, United Way of Regina (UWR) funds programs in the Regina area to create lasting social change and build a strong community. The charity focuses on fostering literacy in young children. The charity reported that almost 50% of children arrive at school already behind and that 70% of students who struggle with reading in the third grade never catch up and are four times more likely to drop out of high school. UWR’s goal is for 90% of third graders to reach grade level reading and for all children to access age-appropriate books. The charity provided a breakdown of spending per program and reported 2.8m in program costs. However, Ci calculates UWR spent $2.4m in program and grants, excluding donor-designated grants.
211 Saskatchewan received 33% of UWR’s program spending in F2024. This is a free, confidential service that connects people to human services via text, telephone, or online chats. In F2024, the website had 233,361 unique site visits in 253 communities across Saskatchewan. The charity reported that the Interpersonal Violence program provided 23,000 pages of resources and had 20,000 unique visitors to its site, a 41% increase from 2022. The UWR stated that the Reconnect service had 14,050 unique visitors with 13,117 minutes of support provided and 1,152 referrals.
Childhood Success received 26% of UWR’s program spending in F2024. This program supports children’s education and literacy to set them up for success. The projects include Campaign for Grade Level Reading, School Readiness, Access to Books, Attendance Matters, and Summer Slide. In F2024, UWR completed 229 eye exams, provided access to 89,000 books and quizzes virtually, and delivered 1,053 backpacks of supplies. The charity’s Summer Success Literacy Camps held 16 summer success camps for 240 campers and delivered 250 backpacks and 2,400 books in F2024. The charity reported that its Family Literacy Hub had 1,145 parents and children participating in 44 family literacy events in F2024. In June 2023, the charity launched its StoryWalk, blending reading with physical activity.
Community Fund Grants received 13% of UWR’s program spending in F2024. United Way of Regina collaborates with local partners to support early literacy and family stability. In F2024, the charity gave out grants to 48 organizations.
The rest of the funding went to Non-Profit Support and Other initiatives (17%) and Community Engagement and Capacity Building (12%).
