Founded in 1992, Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto (SMT) is a Christian charity that provides a variety of services for people in downtown Toronto. It runs a health clinic, a kitchen, and Sunday church services at its Sanctuary located on 25 Charles Street East. It also owns a separate housing location and is actively involved in community outreach. SMT runs five programs: Outreach, Sunday Worship, Community Meals, Lucas House, and its Health Clinic. The charity spent $2.2m on its programs in the fiscal year ending in December 2023.

Community Meals is a program that runs twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday. SMT provides both hot meals and essential services (shower facilities, clothing, books, and internet connection) to those in need. SMH also prepares special meals for holidays and other special events. According to the charity, 300 people benefit from this program each week.

Health Clinic is a program that provides physical, mental, and spiritual care to those who enter SMT’s clinic. Three registered nurses care for an average of 250 active patients each year. The charity also reports that the clinic sees 800 unique yearly visitors.

Sunday Worship is a program that runs once a week on Sunday. According to the charity, this service is a sacred time and an inclusive space where everyone present is encouraged to participate. Four preachers organize and deliver the program.

Lucas House is a shelter program. In 2023, SMT purchased an additional property and rented it out to four people for free.

Community Outreach is a program where SMT listens to and shares stories from its community on its website. The charity did not disclose any quantified results from this program.

Finances

This charity is not financially transparent. Its audited financial statements are not publicly available on its website. Accordingly, Ci retrieved its audited statements from the CRA for 2023, 2022, and 2021. This analysis uses these financial statements. Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto’s financial statements follow line-item costing, meaning it does not properly disclose which expenses relate to programming, administrative, and fundraising expenses. Ci had to use the charity’s T3010 filings with the CRA to determine these values. This is not a best practice.

In 2023, SMT received $1.7m in donations, down 9% from the $1.9m received in 2022. Administrative costs are 8% of total revenues. The charity does not report any fundraising costs. For every dollar donated, 92 cents are available to go towards the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. In 2023, SMT spent $2.2m on its programs.

In 2023, Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto had $1.3m in its reserve funds. This is enough to cover almost seven months of annual program costs.

This profile has been sent to SMT for review. Changes may be forthcoming.
