OVERVIEW

About Hope and Healing International:

Hope and Healing is a 5-star charity with Good Demonstrated Impact. It has an A+ Results Reporting grade, which is above average. For every dollar donated to the charity, 66 cents are available to go to the cause, which is just within Ci's reasonable range.

Founded in 1908, Hope and Healing International (HHI, formerly Christian Blind Mission), is a Christian charity that works with local partners to help children with disabilities in developing countries. The charity states that one in ten kids worldwide live with disabilities and the vast majority don’t get the services they need. It also reports that nine of ten kids with disabilities will never get the chance to go to school, and children with disabilities are three to four times more likely to experience physical or sexual abuse than children without a disability.

In F2024, Hope and Healing ran its programs in nine international countries: Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. In F2024, HHI’s programs reached 1,060,785 people. In F2024, HHI spent $9.8m cash on its programs, or $29.8m including donated goods. Hope and Healing reports it spent $2.3m in Canada on advocacy, education, and spirituality. Ci could not determine if the following results include Canadian programs or if it strictly refers to its international programs.

Child Health represented 66% ($6.4m) of program costs in F2024. HHI aims to improve the health of children through disability-preventing care, medical treatment, rehabilitation plans, and clean water. In F2024, 504,680 children received health care and support. The charity's partners ran 1,251 parent training sessions in healthcare and nutrition, and performed 4,242 surgeries for kids. HHI also reports its program performed 80,728 pediatric consultations and 5,190 youth physiotherapy sessions in F2024.

Family Livelihood represented 26% ($2.5m) of program costs in F2024. HHI provides families with caregiver training, livelihood support, and medical care to help disabled children. In F2024, 368,520 children benefitted from their family receiving training, medical support, or shelter. The charity’s partners conducted 4,155 adult medical consultations and 362 training sessions in disability rights. Its partners also distributed 1,380 livestock and shipped 28 containers of medical equipment and supplies in F2024.

Education represented 3% ($295k) in F2024. HHI aims to make schools more accessible and inclusive by building ramps, accessible latrines, and educational support. In F2024, 69,545 children benefited from accessible education support. HHI’s partners trained 323 teachers in disability-inclusive education and provided 1,222 education support packages.

The remaining 6% of program costs included Social Attitudes (3%, $275k) and Self Value (3%, $265k). These programs aim to help people with disabilities feel included in their communities. In F2024, HHI reports 59,289 children benefitted from its Social Attitudes program, and 58,751 children benefitted from its Self Value program.

Finances

Hope and Healing International received $14.6m in donations and $19.9m in donated goods in kind. The charity spent $9.8m cash on its programs, which is 61% of revenue (excluding donated goods). HHI recorded a surplus of $335k in F2024, which is 2% of revenue (excluding donated goods).

HHI spent $4.4m on fundraising, which is 30% of donations, and $1.4m on administration, which is 4% of revenue (excluding investment income). Total overhead spending is 34%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 66 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

HHI holds $14.7m in reserve funds (cash and investments). These reserves can cover its annual program costs for 1 year and 6 months. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Comments added by the Charity:

Comment added on August 20, 2025:

Every year, Hope and Healing International procures between $14 million and $20 million of high value medical equipment, medicines, PPE and hospital supplies. We see this as a smart, strategic activity – enabling us to have more life-changing impact.

We consider this procurement a part of our fundraising / resource-raising activity. If we were able to include these activities (expense and revenue), we would receive full points on our efficiency score and would raise us to a five star charity.

Within Charity Intelligence’s snapshot of our effectiveness, they cite that we send 66% of every dollar to our cause. We believe this misrepresents our contribution to serving children caught in the cycle of poverty and disability. This calculation does not include the $19.9 million of medical equipment and supplies, and food requested by our partners that we sourced and shipped to trusted partners in FY24. We don’t believe there should be a different value placed on sending cash to buy an operating microscope, and sourcing and shipping a new operating microscope. The result, in the field, is the same – children being given the life-changing surgery and medical treatment they require.

We are working with Charity Intelligence to understand the information they need to demonstrate what we believe to be the high, life-changing impact of our eye-opening, leg-straightening, ability-restoring medical and rehabilitative work.
