Finances

Effect Hope’s audited financial statements use activity-based costing. This is a best practice.

Effect Hope received $5.5m in donations in F2024. The charity spent $4.2m on its programs, which is 67% of revenue. Effect Hope recorded a surplus of $714k, which is 12% of revenue.

Effect Hope spent $732k on fundraising, which is 13% of donations, and $623k on administration, which is 11% of revenue (excluding investment income). Total overhead spending is 24%. For every dollar donated to Effect Hope, 76 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Effect Hope has $7.8m in reserve funds (cash and investments). These reserves can cover 1 year and 10 months of its annual program costs. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Effect Hope uses external fundraisers. Its F2024 T3010 was not yet available at the time of this update. In F2023, Effect Hope paid external fundraisers $139k to collect $155k. It cost Effect Hope 90 cents to raise a dollar using external fundraisers. It is likely more efficient to donate directly to the charity.

Transforming Lives for Over 130 Years

Globally, 1.6 billion people are affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). That’s about 1 in 5 of us.

Effect Hope is the only organization in Canada exclusively focused on serving people affected by NTDs. Motivated by our Christian faith, we refuse to let people suffer needlessly from treatable diseases.

Our work is made possible through collaboration with the Canadian government, foundations, institutions, and donations from thousands of generous Canadians. We work with our committed supporters here in Canada and our partners in the countries where we serve to be champions of hope.

Holistic Care for Lasting Change

Our programs are designed to address a person’s physical condition, while also impacting their social connections, ability to earn a living, and their mental well-being. This helps to promote full restoration of a person’s life, so that they can enjoy physical health, reintegrate into their community, and regain independence.

For people affected by NTDs to successfully overcome the impact of these diseases, the health system around them must be well-equipped.

That’s why we work with public health centres and officials in the communities we serve. We train health care workers to identify the symptoms of NTDs, and deliver appropriate medical interventions. We also work with community leaders to ensure culturally relevant best practices, and participate in advocacy for sustainable outcomes. When a health system is strengthened, no one is left behind.

We seek out the areas and people with the greatest need and work to remove barriers to health for some of the world’s most vulnerable people and communities.

Evidence-based solutions are critical, particularly in places where resources and infrastructure are limited. We seek out the best solutions and innovations that make the biggest difference for people and communities affected by these diseases. We are constantly measuring and evaluating our programs, ensuring your donations are applied for maximum impact.

Your Generosity in Action

In 2023 alone, through strategic programming in Asia and Africa, we:

  • Screened over 1.5 million people for disease through community health checks
  • Educated 65,000 school children about the signs and symptoms of disease
  • Facilitated access to NTD care for over 21,000 people
  • Trained 5,000 healthcare workers to diagnose and treat NTDs
