OVERVIEW

About RESET Society of Calgary:

RESET Society of Calgary is a 5-star, financially transparent charity with a High impact rating and an above-average A- results reporting grade. It has $1.7m of reserve funds that can cover just under one year and seven months of its annual program spending. Its 24% total overhead means that for every dollar donated, 76 cents are available to go to the cause.

Founded in 1989, RESET Society of Calgary (RESET) provides comprehensive support to women and children victims of sex trafficking through its 12-month Exploitation Intervention & Transition (EXIT) program. In this program, clients are first referred to the charity’s i-EXIT emergency shelter by friends, police officers, and social workers. At its shelter, clients receive meals, detox services, and other stabilization services. After 30 days, clients move to RESET’s supportive housing apartments while attending counselling, jobs training, and trauma recovery classes. Clients reportedly receive continuous one-on-one case management support and personalized employment skills training plans while in this program. RESET spent $1.1m on the EXIT program in the March 2024 fiscal year (F2024).

EXIT is RESET’s only program and includes its aforementioned emergency shelter, transitional housing, and life skills and trauma recovery programming. In F2024, RESET admitted 70 women into EXIT, 51 of whom successfully graduated the program. The charity also reported providing over 9,500 nights of shelter in F2024.

76% felt that they are more employable

Finances

RESET Society of Calgary’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing as its financials do not clearly separate expenses into program, administrative, and fundraising activities. This is not a best practice.

In F2024, RESET received $717k of donations and special events revenue (47% of total revenue) and $656k of government funding (43% of revenue). Administrative costs are 17% of total revenue less investment income and fundraising costs are 7% of donations. Its 24% overhead means that for every dollar donated, 76 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

RESET spent $1.1m on its programs in F2024 ($1.1m spent in F2023). Its capital expenditures increased from $9k in F2023 to $519k in F2024 due to the purchase of The Ridge House transitional housing property.

At the end of F2024, RESET had $1.8m gross and $1.7m net reserves (cash and investments). Ci backed out $12k worth of interest-bearing debt from its gross reserves. Its reserves can cover 158% or just under one year and seven months of its annual program spending.
