Founded in 1998, Kensington Health Foundation, formerly known as The Doctor’s Hospital Foundation, raises funds for Kensington Health Centre in downtown Toronto. Kensington Health Centre provides accessible healthcare to the community. The Centre provides 24/7 care for elderly and disabled people. It has an eye clinic and research department to address vision concerns. The charity also has tools to diagnose certain illnesses, such as its diagnostic imaging service. Kensington Health Foundation’s funding gives the Kensington Health Centre the ability to provide services beyond what the government funds.

Kensington Health Foundation’s funding goes towards four programs: Hospice, Kensington Health Centre, Community Care, and Clinics.

The Hospice program received 78% of program spending in F2024. In total, the Foundation spent $1.5m on Kensington Hospice, and $1.0m of this went towards expanding the program’s capacity. The facility has 19 beds. 

In F2024, the Kensington Health Centre program received 11% of program spending. This program provides long-term care through Kensington Gardens, a 350-bed assisted living facility. The Centre also provides palliative care as needed.

In F2024, the Community Care received 8% of program spending. This program runs the Second Mile Club, which provides recreational spaces for elderly and disabled people.  

The remaining 3% of program spending went towards its Clinics, such as Eye Care and Diagnostic Testing. Eye care includes the Kensington Eye Institute, Kensington Vision & Research Centre, and the Eye Bank of Canada. In F2024, these clinics performed 18,554 surgeries, with 1,453 sight restoring corneal transplants. In F2024, there were 84 active research studies and clinical trials through the Kensington Research Institute. Finally, the diagnostics department conducts mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, x-rays, and endoscopies.

Kensington Health Foundation’s audited financial statements follow activity-based costing, a best practice. This means that its expenses are clearly defined between program, administration, and fundraising categories. 

In F2024, Kensington Health Foundation reported $900k in Canadian donations, a 33% decrease from $1.4m in F2023. The Foundation earned $2.0m in rental income on a property that it owns.  

It spent $358k on administration in F2024, which is 12% of revenue. It spent $251k on fundraising in F2024, which is 28% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 40%, an increase from 25% in F2023. For every dollar donated, 60 cents are available to go to the cause. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending of 65 to 95 cents.  

In F2024, the charity reported a surplus of $1.7m and recorded $41m in net funding reserves. Its reserves can cover 1237% or just over 12 years and 4 months. The charity also has an additional $4.4m in loans receivable from related parties.  

In F2024, Kensington Health Foundation paid external fundraisers $300 to raise $32k for a cost of $0.01 per dollar raised.
