Founded in 1992, Kemp Care Network (KCN), formerly known as The Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice Foundation, provides palliative care to adults in Hamilton, ON. KCN has three core programs: Residential Hospice Care, Adult Day Program, and Grief and Bereavement Care. Kemp Care Network does not disclose how much it spends on its programs, nor a breakdown of program costs.
Residential Hospice Care: Dr. Kemp’s Adult Hospice is a ten-bed hospice that focuses on symptom management, memory making, and dignity before the patients death. KCN’s care provides patient’s medical excellence, dignity, comfort, and legacy preparation. Residents and families do not have to pay to be admitted to KCN’s hospice. In F2023, KCN cared for 126 residents, of which 79% were over the age of 65. Of patients in the hospice, 95% of had cancer. KCN received 468 referrals in F2023.
Kemp Care Network’s Adult Day Program provides activities for adults living with a serious illness. The Day Program is open on Wednesdays from 10 am until 2 pm. Typical activities include games, art, storytelling, music, massages, and a three-course homemade meal. Individuals do not pay to have access to the Day Program. The Day Program closed during the pandemic and re-opened in November 2022. KCN began the year with five clients and finished F2023 with 13 clients.
Kemp Care Network’s Grief and Bereavement Program provides support to adults and children after a loved one has passed. The Grief and Bereavement Program comes at no cost to the individual. In F2023, KCN recorded 2,538 interactions with friends and family. The charity ran 177 individual sessions and 57 group sessions in F2023.
Kemp Care Network is in a $2.5m capital campaign to build a children’s hospice. KCN broke ground in May 2024 and expects doors to open in spring 2026.
