OVERVIEW

About Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights:

Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights is a 4-star charity. The charity has an A- Results Reporting grade, which is above average. Its overhead spending is 14%, within Ci’s reasonable range. Its reserve funds can cover just over eight months of annual program costs, which is within Ci’s reasonable limit.

Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights (Action Canada) is the Canadian branch of Planned Parenthood. It works to promote health, wellbeing, and rights related to sexuality and reproduction in Canada and globally. The charity focuses on abortion, contraception, comprehensive sexuality education (sex-ed), and advocacy. Action Canada runs three main programs: Direct Support and Stigma-Free Information, Engaging Policymakers and Promoting Rights, and Collaboration and Movement Building. The charity does not provide a breakdown of spending on these programs.

Action Canada provides direct support and information through its toll-free Access Line, online health information, and resources for educators and health professionals. Its Access Line services offer text and phone support for questions and referrals regarding sexual health, pregnancy, abortion, and safe sex. In F2024, its Access Line received 6,553 calls, which is 1,523 more than the previous year. Action Canada’s Sexually Transmitted and Blood-borne Infections (STBBI) Testing Awareness campaign reached over three million people on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Action Canada launched its Abortion Access Tracker website in June 2024, with the charity reporting that it had 1,772 unique visitors. The charity reported that its Sexual Health Hub had over 50,000 visits in F2024.

Action Canada advocates in Canada and globally for access to safe abortion, sex-ed, 2SLGBTQI+ rights, gender equality, and sex workers’ rights. In F2024, Action Canada delivered two joint statements during the adoption of Canada’s fourth Universal Periodic Review, bringing global attention to unaddressed sexual and reproductive issues. The first statement focused on the barriers to abortion care related to housing and migration. The second statement called for a more robust human rights architecture in Canada, submitted on behalf of 23 civil society organizations.

Action Canada partners with human rights defenders, health care providers, and feminist coalitions to advocate together at the United Nations. Action Canada provided resources to national sexual and reproductive health organizations in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, and Peru in F2024. The partners delivered comprehensive sexuality education to 66,182 young people and sexual reproductive health services to 789,538 people in F2024. The project also works to create spaces for discussion, allowing young people from Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean to share experiences and learn from each other’s struggles.

Results and Impact

The charity reported that its Norma Scarborough Emergency Fund (NSEF) supported 504 clients in accessing abortion care between July 2023 and June 2024. Most clients were from Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta, with 30% from rural areas and 70% from urban centres.

Through its statements at Canada’s fourth Universal Periodic Review, Action Canada secured five recommendations for improving access to sexual and reproductive health services in Canada in F2024. The charity will work to ensure that these recommendations are implemented throughout the coming year.

After years of advocating, in the form of writing petitions, letter campaigns, and submitting policy briefs to elected officials, Action Canada stated that it achieved its goal of establishing legislation for a universal, publicly funded pharmacare program in Canada in F2024. Bill C-64 aims to provide all Canadians with access to necessary medications, including contraceptives, regardless of income, age, region, or employment status.

The charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r), which does not affect its star rating.

This may not be a complete representation of Action Canada’s results and impact.

Finances

Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights’ audited financial statements provide disclosure on its program, administrative, and fundraising activities. However, it reports additional expenses separately, such as salaries. This means that Action Canada follows line-item costing, which is not a best practice.

Action Canada reported $2.1m in Canadian donations and $2.4m in international donations. The charity received $6.2m in government funding, accounting for 55% of total revenue.

Administrative costs were $430k in F2024, which is 4% of revenues (less investment income). Fundraising costs were $218k in F2024, which is 10% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 14%. For every dollar donated, 86 cents are available to go to the cause, within Cis reasonable range.

Action Canada has $6.1m in reserve funds, which could cover 70%, or just over eight months of annual program costs.
